Entry to Practice Examinations

COPR administers three (3) Entry to Practice Examinations:

  • The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) examination is used in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador. 
  • The Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) and Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) examinations are used in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. 

Provincial EMR and Paramedic regulators have the authority to grant registration/licensure/certification to practise as EMRs and paramedics. You must confirm the requirements with the appropriate provincial regulator.

Transition to the Canadian Paramedic Competence Framework (CPCF)

COPR has begun the transition of the examinations to the CPCF from the National Occupational Competency Profile (NOCP). The transition will be gradual and include an overlap of the NOCP and the CPCF versions for all designations. Click here for the timelines.

STEP 1: If you are unaware of which framework (CPCF or NOCP) you have been educated to, you must contact the educational institution. You must know which framework you have been educated to as an EMR or paramedic student before applying for the examination.
